How to convert a new iQ overbridge board to work in place of an older style

Updated by Bryan Jones

Scope

This document covers the instructions to convert a new style (1701-00361) iQ overbridge display board to function like an original (1701-00268) style board.

Description

The original OLED displays (1171-00031) on the overbridge of an iQ console were a 34-pin OLED. These ceased production and In July 2011, were replaced with a new 30-pin display (1171-00056). This necessitated a new main display board.

This new display board is NOT compatible with original mainboards without modification.

If you're not sure if you have an older or new overbridge, you can find out here.

Modification

  1. Remove the OLED nearest the ribbon cable. You can leave it connected but carefully fold it out of the way, being careful not to damage the ribbon cable.
  2. Remove R18 and R19

This photo shows the resistors' locations BEFORE removal.

  1. Install an NXP Semiconductor, TJA1040T/CM,118 high speed CAN transceiver IC onto location marked U1.
MAKE SURE THE IC IS ORIENTED CORRECTLY AS SHOWN IN PHOTO BELOW. If you install the IC incorrectly, the overbridge will NOT function!!

The NXP Semiconductor, TJA1040T/CM,118 IC, is available from Telos as part #1161-00564 or from Mouser.

If done correctly, this will allow a 1701-00361 (aka 1401-00297) to work with the revision 108 (original) Surface Main Boards.
